August 2010 – John Muir Trail Hike

Unbelievable.  Amazing. Hard to put into words.  Not the fact that it had been THREE years since my last hike out west, but of the true natural wonderment that being in the Sierras puts into me.  It is healing.  Tom and I left on Friday, August 13th from Bishop Pass after getting one of the last walk-up back country permits from the Lee Vining Nature Center for Saturday.  We went as far as we could on Friday (5 miles) without breaking the spirit of the permit which allowed us to enter the back country via Bishop Pass.  From there we connected to the John Muir Trail (JMT) 7 miles later via LeConte Canyon where we proceeded south to the fitting end of the trail at the summit of Mt. Whitney (14,995 feet).  Just under 100 miles in 6 nights, 1 summit of tallest mountain in the continental US, five 11,000 foot plus passes crossed (Bishop Pass – 11,900 feet, Mather Pass – 12,100 feet, Pinchot Pass – 12,400 feet, Glen Pass – 11,900 feet, and Forester Pass – 13,200 feet), 15 freeze dried dinners eaten (even one dinner each for breakfast), roughly 30 32 ounce Nalgenes of water consumed, 2 jars of peanut butter spread/dipped/spooned, 1 WAG bag used (which made up several of our countless laughs) and we made our goal.  With our 2007 JMT hike to the Yosemite Happy Isles terminus we have completed the trail.

Each day during the hike Tom and I recorded a video for our kids to watch when we returned.  The 2nd link below should take you to the playlist on YouTube.
